Join Yudhijit Bhattacharjee for a discussion of the intersection between fact and storytelling in long-form journalism.
As a journalist who writes long-form features for magazines, I have heard editors ask me to deliver stories that read like a movie. Except they have to be works of nonfiction because I write about the real world. I've spent the past 15 years searching for and writing narratives about science, medicine, crime and other topics. Using a few of my stories as examples, I'll share what I have learned about reporting and crafting pieces that can hold a reader's attention. I'll talk about how long-form journalists go about shaping their material into compelling stories and discuss how in-depth journalism and cinematic storytelling can be combined to produce works of nonfiction that both enlighten and entertain readers.
