Adam Stier's dissertation examines character networks, or clusters of interconnected characters, in American fiction of the modernist epoch. Drawing on scholarship from literary history, theories of fictional characters, and social network analysis, and considering texts ranging from psychological novels to hard-boiled detective stories, Adam's project aims to demonstrate that American fiction of the late 19th and early 20th century period is best understood in the context of an emergent cultural responsiveness to networked social experience.
